Suspension bridge

The former bridge of Fourques is a suspension bridge dating back to the beginning of the 19th century. He connects Fourques to Arles. It offers bucolic views of the Petit Rhône’s banks.

It was in 1822 that the engineer Marc Seguin filed a project for the construction of suspended bridges, capable of crossing large rivers thanks to wire ropes.

The Fourques suspension bridge, put into service in 1830, is the first bridge built according to this process.

The foundations of its piles are poured into concrete and an interlaced of metal cables support the apron.

The bridge is not very long and is a little lost among the surrounded greenery, before flying over the Petit Rhône. Its arches give it a small solemn tone to a lightweight constructio

 

So go for a walk on the suspension bridge, in Fourques and enjoy the bucolic view of the water and the two banks of this delta arm of the Rhône!
