The Sarcophagus

During your stay in Terre d'Argence, stop in front of the sarcophagus in Fourques (Gard). It is a block dug in stone, an incredible vestige of Roman times.

Life is funny : sometimes you dig a canal, and you find a sarcophagus! Discovered in the commune of Fourques in 1860, this one confirms what we already knew that:

Romans have been in Terre d’Argence.

And that they carried out mourning ceremonies, since these large blocks dug in stone were used to collect the bodies of the deceased.

Today, this stone witness forms with the church located next door, a link between two funeral traditions, they stand a few meters away from each other... but two millennia apart !
